Twenty years ago the fantasy comedy "Miracle on 34th Street" came out at the movies showing that Christmas can bring real miracles. This time we are witnessing a new kind of Christmas wonder but the film set is in Bormio on the Stelvio slope. Despite the difficult weather conditions, Bormio Ski was able to prepare the Stelvio slope for the traditional World Cup end-of-year downhill race. The lack of natural snow at the valley bottom and the higher temperatures compared with the seasonal trend didn't discourage our snowmakers who were able to use all the potential from the snowmaking system.
Last Sunday a FIS delegation, represented by Helmuth Schmalzl, gave official OK for the race after the inspection on the Stelvio slope which, as tradition wants since 1993, will take place on December 29.
The news has a double importance since the Stelvio will not only be available for the World Cup race but also for public. At Christmas Bormio Ski will open new slopes, all those prepared throughout the last few weeks with the use of our snow guns and the perfection of our groomers.
Beyond the World Cup slope, our clients will be able to ski on the slopes Bimbi al Sole, Ermellini 1 and Nevada (full length of the slope and opening of the ski lift Nevada Ovest).
If the weather is going to help us (snowfalls are forecasted) we may be able to open La Rocca, Bosco Basso and Canalino Nuovo too which are currently ready at 50 %.
For this Christmas once again in Bormio you are skiing on a 1800-meter vertical drop from Cima Bianca (3,012 m) to Bormio (1,225 m). If this is not a Christmas miracle, well, we've come very close.
