The time to speak clearly has arrived. For the last few months we've read anything about the issue "World Cup on the Stelvio". What we would like to do now is to eliminate any doubt on our decision not to host the next downhill race. The event had to be taken place on December 29 as usual but SIB communicated its "no" on January 8 to FIS, FISI and BEST - the organizing committee of the event.
Our no to the World Cup is only due to one reason: the date. December 29 is the most troubled day of the season since it matches with Christimas holidays - the highlight moment of the winter when the ski area is packed. The race occupies the Stelvio for four days, paralyzes a whole portion of the ski area, ruins the quality of the service during the most important days.
We made this decision with the greatest awareness and maturity even though it's been very tough. Our choice is for sure not popular but it is the result of many years of negotations with the organizing committee which profoundly knows the issue and promised to find a solution. We proposed two different alternative periods: from December 20 to 24 or after January 10. Taking one-year break may be incentive for finding a perfect date. Bormio has hosted 46 World Cup races and two World Cup Alpine Championships (1985 and 2005) in its history. We deserve to continue our international route but mainly all the millions of fans deserve to have the Stelvio on the white circuit.
We look forward to your understanding and suppor towards Bormio and the Stelvio which deserve more consideration.
